The Empty Tomb
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
a stone
The Point: the empty tomb was full of good news
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word together.
Today is filled with truly good news! (show stone to children) What do I have with me today? (let children respond) I have a stone. It is not a very big stone. Yet it is a reminder of the stone that was rolled away from the tomb where Jesus’ body had been placed. It was Sunday morning, the first day of the week, John tells us in our Bible reading. Mary Magdalene, a follower of Jesus, had gone to Jesus’ tomb. When she got there the stone had been rolled away. Now this wasn’t a small stone like mine but a very large stone that would have taken several men to move. I believe the stone was rolled away not to let Jesus out but so that Mary could look in.
Do you know what she saw? (let children respond) Nothing! Mary didn’t see Jesus’ body there. She ran to the disciples and declared that someone had stolen Jesus’ body. So Peter and another disciple ran to the tomb. Do you know what they saw? (let children respond) No, not nothing. John tells us that they saw the linen cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ body and the burial cloth that had covered his face. Nobody had stolen Jesus’ body. Jesus had risen from the dead. Jesus is alive! The empty tomb was full of the good news of Easter. Jesus lives!
The disciples saw and believed.
Later that evening, even though the doors were locked, Jesus appeared to the disciples. He showed them the wounds of his death on the cross. It was proof that Jesus was alive. Jesus then blessed them with peace. And all the disciples were filled with great joy!
The stone had been rolled away and now all know: the empty tomb was full of the good news of Easter.
Christ has risen! He has risen, indeed!
Prayer: Let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Truly great news greets our ears today, Jesus. You are alive! Remove any stone or anything that would keep us from joining your disciples in believing that you are alive. Jesus because you live we too shall live. May our lives be filled with this good news. In the name of our Savior Jesus, the risen Christ, we pray. Amen.
