Drawn by the Father
Children's sermon
Object:
a magnet, a small cardboard box, and some metal
thumbtacks
Good morning! I want us to try a little experiment this
morning. I have here some thumbtacks and I want to see if we can
get them into this small cardboard box. Now, how would you go
about getting the thumbtacks into this box? (Let them answer.)
Yes, it would be very simple just to pick them up and put them
into the box, but I want you to get them into the box without
touching them. I want them to go into the box by themselves. Can
you make them do that? (Let them answer.)
There is a way to do it. What is this I'm holding in my
hand? (Show the magnet and let them answer.) Now, if I turn the
box on its side and hold the magnet under it, what will happen if
I move the magnet and box close to the tacks? (Let them answer.)
Yes, those tacks will jump into the box. (Demonstrate for them to
show that the tacks do go into the box.)
Now, you and I and all the other people in the world are
just like those tacks in a way. We won't come to God unless He
draws us to Him. Jesus told us that nobody can come to him unless
the Father draws them. We are not Christians because we decided
to be Christians all on our own. We are Christians because God
has drawn us to Him just like the magnet drew the tacks. God does
that through His word. God's word is like this magnet. It draws
us to Him. Let's thank God for drawing us to Him.
Dear Father in Heaven: We thank You for drawing us to You through
Your holy word. Keep us always close to You, and protect us from
all things that would try to take us away. Amen.
