Clean souls
Children's sermon
Object:
some cheesecloth, an aquarium with unclear water, a jar
Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that
you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. (v. 22)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have an aquarium at home? (let them answer) Have you ever tried to clean the aquarium where your fish live? (let them answer) It isn't an easy job. You can put the fish in a different bowl but how do you get rid of the rest of the things that are floating around in the water? You don't want to move all of the things that are planted in the aquarium. You need to be careful. I like to clean my aquarium once each week and this is how I do it. (demonstrate taking the water out of the aquarium and pouring it through the cheesecloth)
Now let's take a look at the cheesecloth that we ran the water through into the jar. (show them the residue left on the cheesecloth)
Today we are going to pretend that the water is our soul and the cheesecloth is something we call honesty. How many of you know what honesty means? (let them answer) It does mean that we don't tell lies, but being honest is more than just not telling lies. We are honest when we believe the truth that is given to us. Jesus is totally honest. When we let Jesus into our lives then we are honest people because Jesus makes us honest. Everything that is bad runs away from Jesus. Even the devil will not stay near where Jesus is living.
If we pour our souls through Jesus just like we poured the aquarium water through the cheesecloth, we will get rid of the bad things and have only clear water or clear souls.
Because we are real boys and girls or men and women, we find that we have things in our souls that we wish would not be there. It could be a bad thought, like telling someone you hate him or her, or it could be hiding when someone needs help. But when we go to Jesus and ask him to live inside our hearts, then Jesus gets rid of all the bad stuff.
The next time you see an aquarium that has dirty water I want you to think about the day we learned how to clean the tank and also remember how Jesus cleans our souls. Amen.
