Chosen for Christ
Children's sermon
Object:
two shoes
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought two shoes with me
because they remind me of this morning's lesson. How many of you
have ever played a game where you put your feet in a circle to
choose who is "it?" (Put both shoes on the floor, begin the rhyme
and as you do, point to the shoes.)
How many of you know this rhyme: "Bubble gum, bubble gum, in a dish, how many pieces do you wish?" (Ask a child for a number, then count that number and then determine which shoe is "it.")
How many of you know this rhyme: "Two horses in a stable, one jumped out." (Now that the children understand the game you are playing, ask for someone to volunteer another rhyme. Or you could go on with "one potato, two potato," or "I shine my shoes with turpentine.")
These games are fun ways to choose who will be "it" when you play a game of hide and seek or something else. Whenever I play hide and seek and other games like this I always want to be "it." When I'm chosen, I feel good. I want you to know that Paul tells us that God chose all of us to be God's people before the creation of the world! God has always wanted us! I always thought it was an honor to be chosen to be "it," but how great it is to be chosen by God.
The next time you are playing with friends and deciding who will be it, remember that God chose you to be one of God's people. God chose us. When God chose us God poured out love and grace to us. We are all God's people.
