Children's Activity
Object:
SHARING THIS WEEK'S GOSPEL THEME AT SUNDAY SCHOOL AND AT
HOME
Materials:
(you may want to have latex gloves for the children to wear for this project)
White shoelaces
Fabric dye in a variety of colors (diluted fabric paint can also be used -- mix in equal parts with water)
Small plastic bowls (recycle by using butter tubs)
Popsicle/craft sticks
Baggies or plastic wrap
Directions:
1. Give each of the children a pair of shoelaces.
2. Have the children tie knots in each lace around one-half inch apart (more or less for color preference).
3. Mix the dye according to the package directions.
4. Have the children dip each of the laces into a color and hold for a few seconds (five to ten is usually enough). Longer dipping time means deeper color.
5. Continue dipping until all the knotted loops are colored.
6. Have the children lay their colored shoe laces on plastic baggies or plastic wrap until dry.
7. Unknot the laces and look at the designs that have been made. Tell the children they can take their laces home and put them in their favorite shoes.
Colors will bleed into each other as you work, so try experimenting to get unique designs.
