Carried into heaven
Children's sermon
Object:
a kite
Good morning, boys and girls. Why do you think I brought a kite with me this morning? (Let them answer.) I brought it because it will help me tell you about one of the most wonderful stories in the New Testament. It is today's lesson. As I tell you the story see if you can think why I brought my kite along. Have any of you flown a kite this year? (Let them answer.)
Today we celebrate Ascension Sunday. It is called this because on this day in the church year we celebrate Jesus going into heaven. After Jesus rose on Easter morning he appeared from time to time to his disciples. This story is about the final time that he appeared to them. On this final visit Jesus told his disciples many things. The Bible says that Jesus opened their minds to understanding the scriptures. That must have been like a teacher in school who explains things to you that you don't understand. Then Jesus told the disciples that something very wonderful would soon come to them from God. He told them to wait for God to send it to them. The disciples didn't know what was coming, but Jesus said that when it came they would all be "clothed with power from on high." Next Sunday we will find out what God sent. After he said this, he took them out into the countryside. He gave them a blessing and walked away from them. Then the Bible says that he was "carried up into heaven!"
Now can anyone guess why I brought my kite? (Let them answer.) Each of you has probably held a kite string and watched the kite slowly rise in the air. (Hold the kite in the air.) It is an exciting feeling. On a very good kite-fly day some kites go so high that you can hardly see them. Perhaps that is how Jesus was carried into heaven -- like this kite that gently ascends in the air.
We don't know, since we weren't there to see it. But whatever happened, the Bible says that the disciples were filled with joy. They returned to Jerusalem and went to the temple and praised God. The next time you fly a kite you might think of Jesus on the day he ascended into heaven. That day was a day filled with joy.
