Blanket theology
Children's sermon
Object:
a blanket
Good morning! Many people are anxious. Would somebody here
have a good definition for "anxious"? What does it mean to be
anxious? (Let them answer.) Perhaps another word for "anxious"
would be "worried" or "concerned about." Do you know of anyone
who is worried or troubled about something? I'm sure you do. I
do. Sometimes I have been quite worried or concerned about
something. Sometimes these troubling thoughts cause a person not
to be able to sleep or eat right, or perhaps they cause a
person's head to hurt. Anxiety or worry can be like living under
a blanket. (Put the blanket over your head.)
Under the blanket I feel safer and more secure. But there are problems living under a blanket. I can't really see anybody. I can't see the beautiful world we live in. I can't see the spring flowers. I can't hear the terrific music we sing in church quite as well. I can't see the wonderful food that is set before me at meal times.
(Take the blanket off.) Living with many cares and worries -- anxiety -- is not a fun way to live. We can take all our cares and anxiety and give them to God. (Take the blanket and place it on the altar or in the offering plate.) We can give our cares to God because we know that God cares for us! What a wonderful life we have living and knowing that God cares!
Dear Lord God: Thank you for taking the things that worry and upset us. Help us trust you more. Amen.
