Bird nest improvements
Children's sermon
Object:
a fancy birdhouse (plus pictures of ideas like a roof to keep out the rain, a landing strip, a worm farm so they don't have to get up for breakfast, a lamp to keep them warm on cold days, and one of those little desk fans to air condition the nest
Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? (v. 26)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever seen a real bird's nest? (let them answer) Where was the nest when you saw it? (let them answer) Some of you have seen them in trees and others have seen them in bushes. Has anyone ever seen a bird nest behind a pipe from the roof that carries water to the ground? (let them answer) The other day I saw a nest in a flower box. Birds build their nests everywhere.
I thought maybe we could help the birds a little so I brought along some ideas. Tell me what you think of my ideas. First, I drew a little roof made out of a piece of wood and a couple of sticks that are glued on. Do you think the birds would like this roof? (let them answer) It will keep them out of the rain. How about this one? I could find some worms and put them in a can right beside the nest so they don't have to get up early to catch the first worm. How about this idea? (let them answer)
Maybe we could build the birds a landing strip like the airplanes have at the airport. When they fly in, they could land on this and prevent crashes. What do you think? (let them answer) I have a little fan that I keep in my office for really hot days. We could put the fan in the tree, just over the nest, and make air conditioning for the birds. Isn't that a good one? (let them answer) Maybe they would like for me to get a long extension cord with a light bulb. Then they could read at night if they didn't have anything else to do or in the winter the light would keep them warm. Are these good ideas or what? (let them answer)
I see that you don't like many of my ideas for the bird nest. Don't you think the birds need help? (let them answer) You're right, the birds don't need any help. As a matter of fact, Jesus told us that the birds don't need to plant or harvest. They don't need their own lakes or ponds. Birds don't worry because they trust God to take care of them. Jesus wants us to be more like the birds and give thanksgiving for all of the things he gives to us. Jesus doesn't want us to worry, either, and tells us that we are more important to God than the birds and if the birds don't have to worry, then neither should we.
Have a happy Thanksgiving and remember that God loves you, even more than the birds. Give thanks to God and to all of the people around you that share their love with you. Amen.
