Good morning, boys and girls. Do you remember my story last
week about the imaginary kingdom and the good king that lived
there? Do you remember that some jealous people killed the king,
but that I told you the story would have a happy ending? (Let
them answer.) Today is the day that I will tell you the happy
ending to that story.
The good king, who we now know is Jesus, was killed and placed in a tomb. Our Bible lesson this morning tells us about the happy ending. Mary Magdalene, a friend of Jesus, visited his tomb earlier in the morning. When she arrived, the stone that blocked the entrance was pushed aside. So, she ran and told Peter and one other disciple about this event. The two ran to see what had happened. When they arrived at the tomb, they saw that the stone was rolled away. Peter went into the tomb. He saw that the material used to wrap the body -- it was something like this (show the cloth) -- was still in the tomb, but Jesus' body was not there! Then the two men then returned to their homes. Mary stayed at the tomb. There she saw two angels in white sitting where Jesus' body had been. She began to cry because she was so sad. Suddenly she turned around and saw Jesus, but did not recognize him. Jesus spoke to Mary and then Mary realized who it was she was with. You can imagine how excited and happy she must have felt. She was the first person to see Jesus! You might guess the next thing Mary did. What do you do when yo have some great news? You go and tell your best friends, don't you? That's what Mary did. She went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord." She told them what Jesus said to her.
Today is Easter. Today we celebrate God's victory over death by Jesus coming back to life. That's why the story of Jesus is good news. It is good news for all of us here this morning. When we have faith in Jesus, we, too, have victory over death.
