Being certain
Children's sermon
Object:
a flashlight
Good morning! "Faith" is a word we use a lot here in church,
but I'm not sure everybody really knows what it means. What is
faith? Can any of you tell me? (Let them answer.)
Well, maybe I can help you understand the word better. The
Bible says that "faith is being sure of what we hope for and
certain of what we do not see." So faith is a lot more than just
wishing or hoping that something is true. Faith means being
certain that it is true!
Now, let me illustrate for you. What do I have here in my
hand? (Show the flashlight and let them answer.) Yes, this is a
flashlight, and a flashlight is used to give light. Now, if I
turn this flashlight on, how many of you think it will give
light? Before you answer, let me remind you that there are many
reasons why the flashlight might not give light. For instance,
the batteries might be dead, the bulb might be burned out, or the
flashlight just might be defective in some way. I'm sure you have
all seen flashlights that don't work.
Okay, with all that in mind, how many think the flashlight
will go on if I press the switch? (Let them answer.)
Let me tell you something else and we will ask the question
again. Do you trust me? Do you believe that I always tell you the
truth? (Let them answer.) Well, I want to tell you that this
flashlight will work. I checked the batteries before church and I
tried it to make sure that it would work. Now, with that
assurance, how many think the flashlight will work? (Let them
answer.)
That's what faith is, children. It's being certain that
something is true even though we haven't seen it because we trust
the one who tells us that it is true. You believed me and trusted
my word and now you can see that it is true. (Turn on the
flashlight.) In the same way, we are certain that what God tells
us is true even though we haven't seen it. That's what faith is
all about.
Dear God: Thank You for giving us faith so that we believe and
trust what You say even though we haven't seen it yet. Amen.
