"Be ready!"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Being ready to meet the Lord when he
returns is not a subject we would ordinarily spend much time on
with our children. We are more likely to speak of this with
adults. However, "readiness" simply means being a believing
Christian, and that is something we should always be willing to
talk about with the children.
*If you live near a Coast Guard facility or have any other
means of getting some U.S. Coast Guard brochures or recruiting
materials, secure these materials and show the children the motto
of the Coast Guard, "Always Ready." You may need to copy
something from an encyclopedia or off the internet.
Talk with them about what this motto means and share the
Gospel message about readiness. Compare what the Coast Guard
motto means in contrast to the Gospel message. You can make the
exercise as long or as short as you want, depending on the detail
you want to use to describe the work of the Coast Guard. You
could do a role-play with some of the children pretending to be
survivors from a sinking ship and have others rescue them.
You want to wind up at a place where they understand that
the readiness being discussed in the Gospel is a spiritual
readiness. Those who are real believers are "Always Ready."
*Play a game of "Pass the Peanut." Set a timer and then pass
a peanut around the group. The person holding on to the peanut
when the timer goes off loses and drops out. Continue with the
game until only one winner is left.
Now discuss with them the wonderful news that none of us has
to be a loser when it comes to being ready for the return of
Jesus. Everyone who loves and believes in Jesus will win because
they will be ready when he comes.
