Be patient!
Children's sermon
Object:
a wrapped Christmas present with candy inside
Good morning! What do I have here? (Show the present and let
them answer.) Yes, this is a Christmas present. Do you have any
of these around your house? (Let them answer.) Well, are you
beginning to wonder what might be in those packages, especially
the ones with your names on them? (Let them answer.) Yes, I'm
sure you're curious and you would like to open the presents right
now, but we have to wait for Christmas. We have to be patient.
Being patient is not always easy, especially if we are
waiting for something really good or exciting, but we all have to
learn to be patient because some things just take time. We can't
rush them even though we would like to. Wouldn't it be nice if
Christmas were tomorrow instead of twelve days away? (Let them
answer.)
One of the things all Christians are waiting for is the
return of Jesus to take us all to be with him in Heaven. He has
promised us that he will come back to do that, and sometimes,
when things seem really bad in the world, I wish he would come
right away. But he tells us that we have to be patient. Nobody
knows when he will return. It might be today or a thousand years
from now. Only God knows for sure when it will happen. In the
meantime, we have to be patient, just like we have to be patient
waiting for Christmas.
But, you know what? We don't have to wait for Christmas to
open this package. This present is for all of you and you can
open it right now. (Let them open the present and share the
candy.)
Dear Jesus: Help us to be patient while we wait for your return.
Amen.
