Actions Reflect Our Words
Children's sermon
Object:
a broom
The Point: Words alone are not enough. Action is needed.
The Lesson: Good morning, girls and boys. It is great to have you come up and share this time with me. Thank you.
Every time I see a broom (show broom) I remember a learning moment in my life. I was just a little older than you are. And in our home I had certain chores to do. Chores are things that I was responsible to do to help in my family. One of those chores was to clean my room by hanging up my clothes and sweeping the floor.
One day when I was supposed to do my chore, I wanted to go out and play with my friends. So I just pushed everything, my clothes and toys under the bed. Then I put the broom in the closet. "I cleaned my room," I yelled as I ran out to play.
Two hours later when I came home to eat supper, my dad met me at the door. "Son," he said, "saying you cleaned your room and cleaning your room are not the same. Now go and do it!"
That is what Jesus is telling us in our lesson. It is not enough to say that you are a follower of Jesus. We must actually follow Jesus. What does Jesus want us to do? What are the chores that we are to do in God's family? Here are a few chores to do: worship, read the Bible, pray, tell people about Jesus' great love, his forgiveness for others, and obey your parents. It isn't what you say that counts. It is what you do.
Closing Prayer: I think it is time to bow our heads and unite our hearts in prayer. Lord Jesus, as your children you invite us to do many things as we truly follow you. May our faith be more than words. Help us so that our action might reflect our words of faith. Jesus, we love you. Amen.
