Proper 18/Pentecost 16/Ordinary Time 23
Preaching The Lectionary Psalms for Cycles A, B, C
Psalm 125 celebrates the presence of God during times of distress. The psalmist offers comfort to those whose faith is in the Lord in times of oppression or difficulty. He assures them that their faith makes them like Mount Zion itself, strong and secure.
Most scholars identify the historical circumstances the psalmist addresses as the difficult period of post-exilic reconstruction of Jerusalem. Of course, that is far from certain. The psalm's content is general enough to address any time of distress or difficulty.
