A Road For The King

Children's sermon
Object:
A clock with “Johnny” imprinted on the face -- real or sketched clock
Good morning boys and girls,

It’s really awesome to see you this beautiful morning. Thanks for joining me. Are you ready to hear a special message I have just for you children?  (children respond)

Has your mom or dad ever reminded you, “It’s time to go to bed?”  Have they ever shouted, “It’s time to hurry up and get ready” for something? (children respond)

Ever hear, “Time to catch your bus for school? Time to go shopping? Time to go fishing? Time to go to church?”

So what tells us it’s time to do something? (show clock) (children respond)

Excellent! Now listen carefully. I am going to talk to Mr. Clock.

(presenter role plays by talking to the clock)

“Hi Mister Clock. Nice to see you this morning. Do you know who you are? You are a great friend. Why are you so great? You help us all the time for us to know it’s time to do something. Like time to go play. Time to go to work. Time to do homework. Time to watch a video. And I see you have a name, ‘Johnny Clock.’ That’s interesting.”

(turn to children) Kids, do you know why why this clock is called a “Johnny Clock?”

Well in the bible, John the Baptist was like a “Johnny Clock.”

He tells everybody, “It’s time to get ready.”

He meant it’s time to get ready for a coming VIP. (A Very Important Person) So who is this VIP that is coming? A king! And like when a king comes from one country to another you make the roads straight and easy for travel. You fix the crooked, winding, dangerous curves. You straighten them.

Really, what John meant, was for people to straighten their lives out. All people are invited to a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. That is, we are sorry for our sins, in order to experience the loving grace of forgiveness. Then, our roads are straight. So what sins in our lives can boys and girls like you be sad and sorry for?

How fantastic, then, is the grace of forgiveness?! You are forgiven! I am forgiven!

Prayer: Thank you, King Jesus, for coming.  Our roads are ready for you to come. Amen.

Object: The object of the lesson is a gesture you will teach the children.

Note: The gesture used both hands. Hold both hands in front of you and make the thumbs-up sign with both hands with both thumbs pointing back at your chest. This is the “ME!” gesture. Then simply rotate your hands back so your thumbs are pointing straight up in the air, like two “OK” signs. This is the “US” gesture.

Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. (vv. 9-10)

Call to Worship:

Jesus warned against with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich towards God. Through our worship today let us pledge ourselves to seek our treasure only in God.

Invitation to Confession:

Jesus, sometimes we envy others because of all they possess.
Lord, have mercy.

Jesus, sometimes we desire all that money can buy.
Christ, have mercy.

For he satisfies the thirsty, and the hungry he fills with good things.... Let those who are wise give heed to these things, and consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

How do you focus on something unseen? How can we set our minds on that which we can't touch, or taste, or verify scientifically? Most practical people want proof. Abstract propositions are difficult to get our arms around, especially if they are from another time and place.

This story begins with gift -- with blessed gift -- with miraculous, blessed giftedness. And I will even tell you now the theme of the story: if you keep your eye on the giftedness of everything, then you yourself can be a gift, you can be a giver, rather than a hoarder.
John W. Wurster
" 'It was I who taught Ephraim how to walk, I took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them' (11:3). They did not know me. Do you?

" 'I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them.' (1:4). But they did not know me. Do you?
