When the Apostle Paul embraced life in Christ he threw away his pedigree and rejected rank and reputation. Every generation since has seen new attempts to imitate Paul. The social reformer, John Humphrey Noyes, tried to live out his convictions by founding and living in the idealistic communitarian Oneida Society. Within its confines there was no money, no private property, but food and shelter for all. This eliminated the need for competition. A visitor to the community once asked her guide to identify the fragrance wafting from Noyes' residence at Oneida.
