In the 1970s televisions series, Barney Miller, Captain Barney Miller and the detectives of the twelfth precinct often tolerate a homeless man named "Ray" who is picked up for misdemeanors, or simply stops by the station for free handouts and a place to vent. Once, when Captain Miller was at odds with the courts over revealing confidence sources in a case, the judge had him locked-up. The now-incarcerated Barney Miller, stripped of all of his status and freedom, has one visitor. It is "Ray" the homeless man who volunteers for the Salvation Army to visit people in jail.
