When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was looking for a church, he applied both at Birmingham and at First Church Memphis. First Church Memphis turned him down, saying he was too young for their needs. Nowhere in King's writings does it say how he felt about this rejection. However, the Birmingham congregation was willing to take on this "untried" preacher, and within six months, the bus boycott was underway, and the clergy of Birmingham were rallying to this young preacher with a way with words.
