Can you imagine anyone finding good, or singing praise to God while your house is on
fire. That is what Samuel Wesley, the father of John Wesley, had his family do.
The parsonage at Epworth where the Wesleys lived, caught on fire. At that time, most of the nineteen children were at home. For a while, John was missing. His young terrified face then appeared in the attic window. Neighbors formed a human ladder to save his life. Samuel counted his children, and despite the flames and loss, all were accounted for. In gratefulness for all their lives being spared, Samuel led his family and others who were there in singing the Doxology.
John the Baptist found his joy and his theme of good news in preparing the way for Jesus. Jesus even said of him, "Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist" (Luke 7:28 KJV).
