Herbert Marshall served in the British merchant marines during World War II. He
described his experience, explaining that all the men on board had to wear life jackets
most of the time. He said, "They got terribly soiled and foul-smelling and, after a while,
you detested them. Coming to port, finally, at the conclusion of my tour of duty, I threw
mine overboard, and watched it sink."
The inhabitants of Jerusalem put their faith in themselves, not God. When the city went
down, it was as if they had chosen to wear faulty life jackets on a sinking ship.
