Teachers: Today's children's message is about a time when God was well pleased with Jesus. The message speaks of times of honor and celebration in our lives and how it feels to be honored and to have someone tell us they are pleased with us. Begin the discussion by sharing a time from your childhood when your parents or teachers were not pleased with you. Talk about how it feels to have disappointed someone. Encourage them to share times that they may have disappointed someone. Don't dwell on the action, but on the feeling the disappointment produced. Then talk about the difference in feelings when someone was pleased with them. Share first your own story and encourage them each to share one time when someone was pleased. Talk also about how it feels to be pleased with yourself when no one tells you. On a piece of tagboard with the caption, "Someone was pleased with me when I ..." add endings to the sentence from your own experience and from what the children share. Add another sentence to each ending with the caption, "It felt ..." Suggest other descriptive words than good or nice; like proud, warm, or exciting.
Parents: A good way to increase self-esteem in your child is to be sure to tell your children when you are pleased. You may want to get out the punch bowl and have more celebrations when you are pleased. Praise and celebrations are great motivators.
