Be Prepared
Children's Activity
Object:
SHARING THIS WEEK'S GOSPEL THEME
AT SUNDAY SCHOOL AND AT HOME
Materials:
Small bowl
Pencil
Candles (5 per child -- birthday candles are suggested)
Heavy Styrofoam (2" thick) or similar substance
Holly and ivy leaves (or other silk flowers suitable for Christmas season)
Directions:
1. Place small bowl upside-down on Styrofoam. Trace around rim of bowl. Cut along traced lines to create circle of Styrofoam. This will be the base of the Advent wreath. Cut one for each child.
2. Give each child a Styrofoam base and five candles. Instruct them to place four candles around the edge of the circle and one candle in the center. Push the candles into the Styrofoam base so they stand on their own.
3. Have them decorate their wreaths by sticking silk flowers and leaves into the base.
4. Remind children that each candle represents one week of Advent. The fifth candle is the Christmas candle, to be lit on Christmas day! We use Advent wreaths to track the time as we prepare for Christmas.
