Children's sermon
Object:
a child's old blanket
Good morning! I have an old blanket here. It doesn't look like
much to you or to me, but to the boy who owns this blanket, it
means a great deal. When he would fall on his bicycle and skin
his knee, he would get his blanket and curl up in it and would
immediately feel better. If someone called him a name that would
hurt his feelings, he found that he could wrap himself in this
blanket and feel much better. If the school bully would hit him
in the stomach, he found that this blanket comforted him.
One day the boy's dog got run over by a car. He was very, very sad. But -- you guessed it -- his blanket made him feel much better.
Things would make him cry and the blanket would make him feel better. But there was something that made him feel even better than his blanket and that was when his mother would hug him tight and dry the tears from his eyes and tell him that everything would be okay. THEN he would feel much better.
The promise that God gives to us is that heaven is like a mother's hug or a warm blanket -- only much better. In heaven we will not cry because of hurt or sadness. Heaven is a happy place where we are with God. I am glad I am going to heaven. But until I get to heaven, God has given me a lot to do on earth. Each of us has a lot to do. You do and so do I. And when our work is over, God will call us home to a place where we will never have tears of sadness or hurt.
