Ultimate obedience
Children's sermon
Object:
a note from a parent (text below)
Good morning! I have here a note from a parent. It reads this
way: "When you get home from school today, I want you to clean
your room, wash the dishes, and take out the garbage." Now, if
you got that note from one of your parents, what would you do?
(Let them answer.) I hope that most of you would do what your
parent had asked you to do. We have a word for doing what our
parents ask us to do. It's called obedience.
I doubt that your parents ever ask you to do anything
unreasonable. Sometimes, however, the things they ask you to do
are hard to do or they keep you from doing what you really want
to do. When that happens, should you still do what they want you
to do? (Let them answer.) Yes, of course. You love your parents
and you should always be obedient even when it's hard.
Jesus' Father in Heaven, God, asked him to do something that
was really hard! He asked him to die a terrible death on a cross.
Do you think it was easy for Jesus to be obedient to what his
Father asked him to do? (Let them answer.) No, it was very hard.
But did he do it? (Let them answer.) Yes, he did! And because he
was obedient, you and I can have our sins forgiven and go to
Heaven. If Jesus had not been obedient, all of us would have been
lost. Aren't you thankful that Jesus was obedient? (Let them
answer.) Well, let's thank him now.
Dear Jesus: We are so thankful that you were obedient to your
Father in Heaven and obeyed him when you suffered and died on the
cross to pay for our sins. Help us to be obedient to our
parents. Amen.
