The outrage of grace | Luke 15:1-10 | Sermon
I've recently been reading a most fascinating book, Between Noon and Three: Romance, Law, and the Outrage of Grace. The author Robert Farrar Capon, is an Anglican priest, and his subject is the outrage of grace. The book is part parable, and part theological reflection, but the parable is very unusual for a clergyman. The story is about a married university professor who is a master of infidelity and adultery and who has had multiple affairs, but who falls in love with a married graduate student.... click here for the full sermon

'Real' Christians | 1 Timothy 1:12-17 | Sermon
As a teenager, I remember a visit to our church youth club by Sylvia. I can't remember her surname or a great deal about her, but I do remember that she had an impressive story to tell. She must have been in her twenties at the time, and related her history of alcohol abuse and prostitution and prison and doing all the sorts of terrible things I'd read about in newspapers but never actually encountered myself.... click here for the full sermon

Can God be bought? | Exodus 32:7-14 | Sermon
At a very young age, Jamie discovered that he was excellent at math. While the other children were struggling through their multiplication tables to find the answer to a problem, Jamie knew immediately. The answer was in his head. He loved the patterns formed by numbers and he could discern beauty in math. When he was eight, Jamie was chosen to represent the school in a math Olympiad. It was like a huge examination of all the children in the country who were best at math, in a fun setting... click here for the full sermon

When Jodie was Lost | Luke 15:1-10 | Children's Story
It was Jodie's first holiday at the seaside, and she loved it. The weather was warm and sunny, and Jodie spent every day on the beach with her Mum and Dad. Mostly her Mum and Dad wanted to lie on sun loungers on the sand, with a wind-break to protect them from any breeze, but sometimes they built sandcastles with Jodie. And sometimes they played French cricket with her and with lots of other children who miraculously appeared whenever the bat and the ball emerged from Jodie's Mum's large shopping bag.... click here for the full sermon

Grandma's Pendant | Luke 15:1-10 | Children's Liturgy and Story
There is always delight when something which has been lost, is found, so God is always delighted when any of us return to him. In this story, Jack is afraid to tell the truth about a lost pendant, but his grandmother is so delighted when it is found, that nothing else matters.... click here for the full story

Rescuing God | Intercession
Rescuing God, your sense of grace is outrageous. Where are the restricting fences? Where are the boundaries? Where are the penalties for violation of rules? If you just leave me to do whatever I want, then welcome me with open arms and throw a party whenever I'm found, how shall I ever learn to be good?... click here for the full prayer

What is The Village Shepherd?

The Village Shepherd offers sermons, bible stories, children's stories and prayers based on the Revised Common Lectionary. These inspirational sermons, stories, and prayers are sure to touch your heart, because they reflect the simple virtues and tranquil serenity that characterize Reverend Scott's English countryside pastorate. The questions "Where is God in this particular situation?" and "Where does the Gospel story cross our own human story?" are always at the heart of these meditations -- but rather than finding overt answers, instead you will be gently led to make your own connections and discover the powerful ways in which God works. Janice Scott has the unique ability to find interesting details in ordinary life that illuminate scripture, while still challenging even the most intellectual reader. And that gift is precisely what also makes her an outstanding communicator with children.

For every Sunday in all three cycles of the Revised Common Lectionary, you'll find:
  • Sermons based on the Gospel readings
  • Sermons based on the Epistle readings
  • Children's stories linked with the Gospel readings (most are original, through some are adaptations of old Christian legends or Bible stories)
  • A group of intercessory prayers for your worship service

Reverend Janice Scott

Janice Scott is the Rural Dean of Redenhall Deanery, covering 32 parishes in South Norfolk, England. Her introduction to the Norfolk area came in 1999 when she received an e-mail from someone in a country parish, pleading for a priest. The writer turned out to be nine years old. As a result of that e-mail she became rector of six small country parishes in rural Norfolk, where she resides today.

Her career as a priest began in 1994 when she was ordained at Norwich Cathedral with the first group of women clergy in the UK.

In addition to her parish duties and writing The Village Shepherd, Rev. Janice Scott is a freelance writer for Redemptorist publications in the UK. She also broadcasts a "Pause for Thought" on a local radio station.
