On this Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany, we begin the series of parables in Leationary Cycle A with a double parable of salt and light. Is there a person who does not use salt and light every day? Is there a person who does not know from experience what salt and light are? In these parables we are dealing with two universal and indispensable elements of life.

Consider the importance of salt in our lives. Like seawater, our bodies contain salt: a tear, a drop of blood, a bead of sweat. Without salt our hearts would not beat, blood would not flow, and muscles would not work properly. Before birth a baby develops in a saline solution.
