There is a good word to be said in support of channel-surfing. In late 1994, CBS aired a movie called Without Warning. The only thing was that many viewers did not realize that it was a movie. The movie was done in the style of a live emergency newscast. So all of a sudden, some network reporters showed up on the screen, announcing that an asteroid was racing toward Earth, that nothing could be done about it, and that the people of the world needed to prepare themselves for massive destruction. Although the movie included a statement at the beginning that it was just a movie, those who tuned in part way through did not know that, and many people panicked. More than 150 people called into the local television station, wanting more information about what was going on. Of course, that kind of production is nothing new.
