How many of you play softball or baseball? (Let them answer.) Do you ever choose sides? (Let them answer.) What happens when sides are chosen? (Let them answer.) The team captain tries to choose the best players. The more good players you have on your team, the better are your chances of winning games. Of course those who are not such good players often feel left out.

If we were choosing sides for building a church, we might also want to choose the best people. We might choose the people who are always nice to others. We might want people who are generous and who give their money to others to help out. We might want people who have a good reputation and name for themselves.

So, when Jesus chose his followers -- his students -- we might expect that Jesus would choose the best people. We might expect him to choose "religious" people who went...
